The Beagle’s Temperament

Often described as “merry,” the Beagle is an energetic, happy, easygoing, lovable companion. Bred to hunt in packs, Beagles enjoy being around humans and other dogs. They require a good amount of mental and physical activity and would fare best in an active household.

Physical Traits and Grooming Needs

There are two Beagle varieties: Beagles that stand under 13 inches and Beagles that stand between 13 to 15 inches. Beagles are a “sturdy” dog even with a smaller stature. They come in colors such as lemon, red and white, and tricolor. Beagles are best known for their low-set ears and broad heads.

Beagles have smooth, dense double coats that are heavier in the winter and shed in the spring. They shed moderately throughout the year, so weekly grooming is key to making them look and feel their best. Beagles don’t require frequent bathing.

How Much Training Does a Beagle Need?

As for all dogs, early socialization and puppy training classes will ensure your dog grows into a well-behaved adult. Beagles are particularly receptive to treats during training and don’t respond well to harsh training techniques. Plenty of patience and positive reinforcement are some of the best practices for effectively training a Beagle.

Prospective owners should also note that Beagles can become destructive when left alone for long periods of time, regardless of whether they’re inside or outside. These destructive habits are best curbed when a Beagle has a human or canine companion with them.

Beagles are extremely loyal, easygoing dogs. They’re eager to please their owners and are quite intelligent. They thrive on companionship and are good with young children. Beagles require a lot of exercise and would be happiest in an active household. Regular physical and mental stimulation is key in keeping a Beagle on its best behavior.

How Social Are Beagles?

Beagles are bred as social dogs and are happy to have the company both of humans and other dogs. Their happy-go-lucky, laidback nature make them an excellent addition to almost any family looking to bring a dog into their lives.
